Types of Dental Extractions

Hearing you need a tooth pulled isn’t exactly music to anyone’s ears — but sometimes it’s the best next step for your health. You might’ve seen words like “simple extraction” or “surgical extraction” on a treatment plan and wondered what they meant. Aren’t all extractions basically the same? Not quite. The type of dental extraction depends on the tooth, its position, and the condition it’s in.

At Windmill Dental, we walk patients through each option, explain what to expect, and make sure you’re as comfortable as possible.

Simple Extractions: The Most Common Type

Simple extractions are usually performed when a tooth is visible above the gum line and easy to reach. It might be damaged, decayed, or loose — but still intact enough to be removed in one piece.

In this case, Dr. Whetten will numb the area, loosen the tooth with gentle pressure, and lift it out. It’s quick, straightforward, and often over before you realize it.

Surgical Extractions: For Teeth Below the Surface

Some teeth aren’t so easy to access. They may be broken at the gum line or never fully came in (like impacted wisdom teeth). That’s when a surgical extraction is needed.

Surgical extractions involve a small incision in the gum to access the tooth. In some cases, the tooth may be sectioned into smaller pieces to allow for easier removal. This type of dental extraction takes a bit longer and may require more recovery time, but it’s very common — especially with wisdom teeth.

What About Impacted Teeth?

An impacted tooth is one that hasn’t fully erupted and is stuck beneath the gum or bone. These are often wisdom teeth, but not always. Impacted teeth can cause pressure, pain, or crowding, and are typically removed through surgical extraction.
