What are my options for dental sedation?

Windmill Dental offers two choices for sedation dentistry:

Oral conscious sedation involves taking a prescribed sedative pill before the appointment. This method provides moderate sedation, leaving you awake but deeply relaxed and possibly drowsy. It is administered orally as a pill or liquid, helping to reduce anxiety while minimizing your memory of the procedure. This option is ideal for patients with moderate dental anxiety, longer or more complex procedures, or those who prefer to avoid needles.

General anesthesia, on the other hand, puts you into a controlled, unconscious state throughout the procedure, ensuring you have no awareness or memory of your treatment. This method is best suited for extensive dental surgeries, complex procedures, patients with severe dental phobia, or those unable to sit still for long periods.

Can I drive myself home after receiving dental sedation?

Both of our sedation methods temporarily impair your reflexes, coordination, and decision-making abilities, making it unsafe to operate a vehicle post-treatment. For oral conscious sedation, the effects can linger for several hours, while general anesthesia requires even more time for recovery, usually around 24 hours. Patients are required to arrange for a responsible friend or family member to wait in our lobby and drive them home.

Are oral conscious sedation and general anesthesia safe?

Oral conscious sedation and general anesthesia are generally considered safe when administered by trained professionals. Dentists and anesthesiologists evaluate your medical history and monitor your vital signs throughout the procedure to ensure safety. Oral conscious sedation has minimal risks and is suitable for most patients. General anesthesia involves deeper sedation, which carries slightly higher risks, but complications are rare when proper precautions are taken.
